Other Activities

What other activities does TWFS offer?

As a result of a survey of members’ views we have identified two main needs: some are interested in discussion groups; quite a few would like the opportunity to socialize. To counter-balance, we must emphasize that some are emphatic that they joined solely to watch films, so we must take both views into account.

Discussion groups?

These have never really got off the ground. One problem is that we cannot, of course, use the cinema after the film, as the staff rightly want to clear the cinema and go home. So any discussion group must be elsewhere.

The second is that the committee, which is small and has plenty to do anyway, will not actively organize discussion groups. If a member were to join for that purpose that would be fine but, so far, no one has volunteered.

There is nothing, of course, to stop individuals organizing there own little groups on an informal basis. Again, there has so far been little sign of this.

Socializing

We’re slightly too large a society to be able to fit comfortably into someone’s home. So we have to find somewhere else, remembering that to hire a ballroom, with costs of wine and nibbles, would break us financially. It just so happens, however, that there is a cinema in Wells which can currently accommodate all members who wish to see our films. So we shall try to organize pre-film drinks on the odd occasion — the pre-Christmas film, for instance.

Remember too that, if you arrive early for a TWFS film, the bar is open and you have ample opportunity to introduce yourself to others before the film.

And after the film, there is the City Arms, a welcoming pub not more than about 300 yards (sorry, metres) away. Attempts to organize this formally have withered, as many simply want to go home untroubled by thoughts of Drink and Drive laws.

One further point, nothing in our Constitution or Code of Conduct prohibits members from offering hospitality to each other outside TWFS. (Just thought we’d mention it.)
